Storyline: A U.S Marshall Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) are sent to a asylum (which is on a prison-like island) to investigate a missing patient but he discovers so much more. Daniels' investigation gives way to his own complex conspiracy theories about what really happens on Shutter Island.
Review:
Shutter Island is a well crafted psychological thriller by Martin Scorsese.Shutter Island is adapted by a brilliantly written novel by Dennis Lehane(writer of "Mystic River").The film is very faithful to Dennis Lehane's already great story. Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. But the suspious behavior of the doctors of the hospital staff and the nightmares of his past confused him .He believes that there are unethical treatments are being conducted on patients.At one point,Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner,his mission.
Shutter Island is the example of how a novel should be interpreted to film.Scorsese perfectly gives us the dark atmosphere feel of the island by the locations-The lighthouse, the civil war fort colony where the most dangerous patients are kept,the caves.The cinematography is bright and gorgeous.This movie challenges the viewer pyschologically and the atmosphere throughout the movie is tense.You can better understand this movie after seeing it second time. DiCaprio has given a stunning performance in the role of a haunted and terrified man.The supporting cast Ben Kingsley;Michelle Williams; Mark Ruffalo; Max Von Sydow; Jackie Earle Haley; Emily Mortimer; Patricia Clarkson; Ted Levine; Elias Koteas; John Carroll Lynch-also performed well.This is a solid thriller with a good story.
This breathless suspense thrillar will leave you, and the main character, searching for answers.

कथासूत्र: एका बंदी गृहासारख्या बेटावरून गायब झालेल्या रुग्णाला(मनोरुग्ण?)शोधण्याची जबाबदारी डनिएल्स(लेओनार्डो डिकप्रिओ ) आणि त्याचा सहकारी (मार्क रफालो ) यांच्यावर सोपविण्यात येते.या शोधात त्याच्यासमोर अशी काही चक्रावणारी माहिती येते की त्याची शोध मोहीम एका अनपेक्षित,विलक्षण भूलभूलैयाने भरलेल्या गूढ वळणावर येवून थांबते.
परीक्षण: शटर आयलंड ही मार्टिन स्कॉर्सेसेची एक उत्तम कारागिरी आहे. डेनिस लीहान ह्या प्रसिध्द लेखकाच्या याच नावाच्या गाजलेल्या कादंबरीवर हा चित्रपट आधारित आहे. हा गूढ रहस्यपट (psychological thriller) मूळ कादंबरीशी प्रामाणिक आहे. बोस्टनच्या शटर आयलंड या बेटावरील अशलेक्लिफ हॉस्पिटलमधून अचानक गायब झालेल्या पेशंटला हुडकून काढण्याची जबाबदारी दनिअल्स वर टाकलेली आहे. गायब व्यक्ती याच बेटावर कोणत्यातरी कोठडीत आहे आणि या बेटावरील कैद्यांवर/रुग्णांवर त्यांच्या संमतीविना ,वैद्यकीय दृष्ट मान्यता नसलेले (non ethical) उपचार केले जातात याबद्दल त्याची खात्री पटते.गायब व्यक्ती विषयी हात राखून डॉक्टर्स देत असलेल्या माहितीविषयीची साशंकता व दनिअल्स च्या भूतकाळातील अप्रिय घटनांची वारंवार पडणारी दु:स्वप्ने यांनी त्याचा मेंदू पार चक्रावून जातो.विचारांच्या भोवऱ्यात भिरभिरणाऱ्या दनिअल्स ला एका क्षणी स्वत:ची स्मरणशक्ती,त्याची शोधमोहीम,आपला सहकारी,दनिअल्स येथे स्वत: या कामगिरीवर आला आहे की मुद्दाम आणला गेला आहे?-या सर्वच प्रकाराविषयी त्याच्या व प्रेक्षकांच्या मनात संभ्रम निर्माण होतो.
एखादी कादंबरी किती समर्थपणे चित्रपटात रुपांतरीत करावी याचे शटर आयलंड एक उत्तम उदाहरण आहे. बाहेरील जगाशी संबंध तुटलेले एकाकी बेट, काही वेगळे हिंसक रुग्ण ठेवण्यासाठी युद्धात वापरलेला किल्ला,लाईट हाऊस,बेटावरील अंधाऱ्या गुहा या सर्वांतून स्कॉर्सेसेने उभे केलेले गूढ,काळोखे,मळभ दाटलेले वातावरण फार प्रत्ययकारी आहे. यात सर्वात मोठा वाटा चित्रपटच्या सुंदर छायाचित्रणाचा आहे.प्रथमपासून शेवटपर्यंत दनिअल्स आणि प्रेक्षक सुद्धा एका विलक्षण तणावात वावरतात आणि दनिअल्स च्या शोधमोहिमेत अक्षरश: गुरफटले जातात. हा चित्रपट एकदा पाहिल्यानंतर काही गोष्टींचे गूढ म्हणावे तसे उलगडत नाही,त्यासाठी तो पुन्हा एकदा पाहावा अशी शिफारस आहे. गोंधळलेल्या,बावरलेल्या विमनस्क U.S. मार्शल ची भूमिका लेओनार्डो डिकप्रिओने अतिशय ताकदीने साकारली आहे. चित्रपटाच्या संपूर्ण टीमनेच -( बेन किंग्सले,मिशेल विल्यम्स; मार्क रफ्फालो ;मक्स वोन साय्डो; जाकी अर्ले हाले ; एमिली मोर्टीमर; पट्रीशिया क्लार्कसन ; टेड लेविन ; एलिअस कोटीयाज; जॉन कॅर्रोल लिंच) सर्वोत्तम अदाकारी दाखवली आहे. श्वास रोखून धरायला लावणारा हा रहस्यपट तुम्हाला व मुख्य पात्राला काही प्रश्नांची उत्तरे शोधण्यास निश्चितच भाग पाडेल.
हिंदी आवृतीत इंग्लिश प्रमाणे (English Review :sex and nudity मध्ये पहा ,शिवराळ भाषा वगैरे ) काहीच आक्षेपार्ह नसल्यामुळे हा चित्रपट सर्वांनी सहकुटुंब पाहण्याजोगा आहे. मानसिक रुग्ण व लहान मुले(15 वर्षाखालील)यांनी पालकांच्या मार्गदर्शनाखाली पाहावा .चुकवू नये असा चित्रपट!
